Making the Most of Your Protege’s Goal Sharing

You’ve been matched with your protege and get the chance to see their goals for the year. Your protege has been reflective and vulnerable in thinking about the ways in which they want to improve their lives and posted their goals on their page for all to see. In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle would call this a “threshold moment,” which he defines as the point in which the brain decides to connect with a new group of people. What your protege’s brain is seeking right now are cues from their team of Backrs that they are welcome and supported as you begin this journey together. So, how can you best capitalize on this threshold moment?

  1. Engage with your protege’s goals on the Backrs platform to show your support. It may seem small, but the simple actions of liking their goals and commenting words of affirmation are ways of embodying your encouragement and belief in your protege. Using this moment to connect with your protege’s goals will not only demonstrate your support, but create the connection that their team is a safe space.

  2. Highlight any connections you see between your protege’s goals and your experiences. This helps proteges see the many ways in which their Backrs team can be the helping link between where they are and where they want to go. If proteges are able to see this, they are more likely to continue engaging with the team in pursuit of their goals, and resist giving up.

  3. Check in on your protege’s progress every few weeks. They, like you, lead busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs, extracurriculars, and family responsibilities. Asking about a specific goal or offering advice, encouragement, and connection every few weeks will not only show your continued support, but also open new conversation, illuminate current obstacles, and provide new pathways for progress.

As you and your protege begin your Backrs journey together, it is important that your protege feel connected to their team of Backrs, and interacting with their goals is a great way to start. This “threshold moment” is an opportunity to begin building the strong connections that can ensure your protege is empowered to achieve their goals.
